Start a story circle

What's a Story Circle?

Story Circles are a powerful way to bring people together, foster understanding, and build relationships through storytelling and deep listening. At the Linden Leadership Collective, Story Circles are designed to bridge divides by creating a space where participants can share personal experiences, listen with intention, and find common ground.

Start a Story Circle in your local community:

Gather 5–7 people from diverse backgrounds to share their stories. Keep the group small enough to ensure everyone has time to share.

Create a Welcoming Space

Arrange chairs in a circle to promote equality and openness. Add thoughtful touches like soft lighting or a centerpiece (e.g., an object tied to the theme) to make the space inviting.

Explain the Process

Start by introducing yourself and explaining the purpose of the circle. Share guidelines for participation:

  • One person speaks at a time.
  • No interruptions—active listening is key.
  • Passing is okay; participants can share later if they feel ready.

Model the First Story

Model the First Story
As the facilitator, share your own story first to set the tone. Be vulnerable and authentic to encourage others to do the same.

Reflect together

After everyone has shared, open up for reflection. Ask questions like:

  • "What did you learn?"
  • "What themes stood out to you?"
  • "How did these stories shift your perspective?

Close with Gratitude

End by thanking participants for their openness and courage. You might conclude with a group activity, such as sharing one word that captures their experience or creating a collective takeaway.
